Learning techiniques

It's all very well teachers and parents saying you have to learn your lessons but if you don't have the right techniques to suit what kind of a learner you are, then however much you read and re-read your books it's very likely you won't remember much!

For Visual Learners

  • Mind maps are a fantastic way as they tap into your visual memory. Here is an example of a mind map that I put together to help with irregular verbs and another for vocabulary.

  • Re-read lessons taking notes of the most important points. Write these notes onto blank postcards and highlight with coloured pens grammatical points, pronunction etc. Make sure to be consistent with the colours you use.

  • Stick pieces of paper with notes around the house and look at them regularly. The more you look the more you will remember.

For Auditory Learners

  • Study with a friend. Explain things to each other, ask each other questions.

  • Record the notes you've made on your mobile phone and listen back to them regularly. The more you listen the more you will remember.

  • Sing your revision notes to the tune of a song you know! Sounds silly but can really help.

For Kinesthetic Learners

  • Walk around while reading or listening to your notes
  • Dance to music with English words and listen out for sentence structures, verb tenses and words you recognise.

All the above techniques use more than one type of learning style. The most important thing to remember is that you need to find which technique suits you best.

Good luck!
